Become familiar to Perlite as an industrial mineral and its applications and understand the intrinsic characteristics and the key properties of Perlite in relation to its potential applications. Gain in-depth knowlegde about the peculiarities of the expansion process for the different qualities of perlites in each sector of final application.
Before the beginning of the course each participant is asked to send in his/her specific interests regarding the applications of perlite– end uses and markets, if he/she wishes to do so. Some Course Contents and especially the tutorial sessions as well as the assignments for the participants will be based on this information.
Thus, for each session there will be an initial presentation, that will generate questions and discussions. For activating learning and increasing the effectiveness of teaching, each issue of interest will be an assignment at the last day of the course. Of course, additional information and guidelines will be provided. The assignments will be collaborative. Groups of participants having the same interest will have to accomplish a corresponding target.
The course consists of 5 sessions. These sessions have been created based on the similarity of the applications of perlite regarding key characteristics, applications and/or markets
Session 1 - Introduction to perlites. General characteristics and fundamentals will be handled. Issues that will be discussed are: definition and general uses, production by geographical sector, characteristics of processes, fundamentals of markets
Session 2 – Perlite as pozzolan in cement and concrete: The definition, specific characteristics and specifications will be discussed. Emphasis will be also given to market trends, competitive materials etc.
Session 3 – Perlite in construction applications: This session concerns Plasters and Mortars, Ceiling Tiles, Expanded Perlite Boards (EPBs). The process, properties and specifications will be analytically presented. Insulation in the construction is among the major issues that will be discussed.
Session 4 – Agricultural applications of perlite: The physical characteristics of these products will be discussed. Competitive materials and other market issues will be discussed.
Session 5 – Collaborative assignments – Presentations & videos of laboratory practices: Knowledge assessment through organized teamwork and exercises will take place as a closure to this seminar.
Type of training
The teaching method of this course will be a combination of face-to-face teaching leading to guided independent learning.
The duration of the course is 3 days. During the first 2 days the theoretical background will be developed. The third day an interactive session of laboratory practices demonstration through videos as well as collaborative assignments will take place.
