The course focuses on the relation of data science and the exponentially growing volume and diversity of (multi-source, multi-sensor) data, on one side, and the trends of the disruptive technologies and forces shaping the exploration, mining and use of raw materials and energy resources, on the other – including political risk, market volatility, climate change, circular economy, the companies’ social responsibility and social license to operate, the world’s population demographic and available income growth and the growing complexity and increased access difficulty to mineral and energy resources.
The course aims to present a 360º perspective of the challenges the society will face in the next century in the supply and use of raw materials and energy and the technologies used to overcome them.
The course is based on a heavy use of practical cases – analyzed and discussed by the students as a means to explore ways to solve real problems, question the methods’ underpinnings and consolidate the grasp of their theoretical and methodological basis. Students are encouraged to bring their own data and problems to discuss during the course.

The course is presented in six modules (three days). Each day's activities are divided in two parts: one dedicated to the analysis and discussions of state of the art and trends in XXI century society, raw and energy resources and data science technologies; the other dicated to the analysis of specific data science methods and application cases.
Day 1 Morning: Classical and unconventional raw materials and energy deposits. Resources, reserves, risks and markets - methodologies and international standards and guidelines.Afternoon: Data Science - General model. Unknow resources estimation
Day 2Morning: Energy transition, climate changes, raw materials and circular economy. The society and mineral and energy resources: transparency, sustainability, social responsibility and waste.Afternoon: Production control. Pricing.
Day 3Morning: Digitalization, IoT, Autonomous Vehicles, 5G, Blockchain. Deeper, further away: deeper into the crust, the ocean bottom, Moon, Mars and the asteroidsAfternoon: Clustering. Time series. Text mining.

After a 30 years career in Mining and Civil Engineering (including work in underground mines, mineral processing and consulting in civil and construction projects), I am currently a full time PhD student.
I started as a mining engineer at SOMINCOR, Neves Corvo mine (copper and tin) in 1987. Left in 1993 and went to NSBE for an MBA. In 1996, started working in BERALT TIN & WOLFRAM, Panasqueira Mine (wolfram, tin and copper mine), becoming Ore Treatment Plant Manager. In 1998 I started working in the civil construction area.
In 2011 I started an independent career and for one year developed some knowledge on Angola diamond exploration in a Portuguese mining consultancy company, SINESE. From 2012 to 2015 I collaborated with EnviEstudos as a mining consultant for coordination of PARP SOMINCOR 2014 (Neves Corvo Mine Closure Plan revision), supervision of Safety Operating Procedures documents review of Neves Corvo mine site, participation in the Neves Corvo Mine Closure Plan revision 2016 and in the ALMINA (Aljustrel copper and zync mine) Mine Closure Plan 2016. Since May 2016 I have integrated the research team of SOCIUS/CSG (Research Centre in Economic and Organizational Sociology/ Research in Social Sciences and Management) at ISEG.
Since September 2014 I have been appointed by Ordem dos Engenheiros de Portugal as representative for the Portuguese Government Manufacturing and Extractive Industries Working Group (GTTITE) within Coligação Crescimento Verde (Portugal Green Growth Commitment).
I am presently working on my PhD project regarding mine closure, focusing on stakeholder relationships management within corporate social responsibility. I also develop research on socioeconomic impacts related to the exploitation of mineral resources.
My current professional activity revolves around Economic Geology (primarily) and Data Analysis. I am currently partner and general manager of Sínese, a consulting company created in 1995.
I coordinated and executed many exploration, evaluation and valuation of mineral projects in Angola, the Republic of Congo, Portugal, Brazil and Ecuador, among others.
I hold degrees in Mining Engineering (Applied Geology), Engineering Geology (MSc), Business Administration (MBA) and Engineering Sciences (PhD) and a postdoc in Mining Engineering.
I was born in Lisbon, Portugal in August 29, 1963. I currently live in Lisbon, Portugal; during my childhood I also lived in Mozambique and Angola. I am fluent in Portuguese (native language), English, Spanish and French.
I am a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geology and I hold the qualifications of European Engineer – EUR ING, European Geologist – EUR GEOL and I am a Senior Engineer (Ordem dos Engenheiros).
I am member of the following professional societies and organizations:
