An overview of perlite is provided.
General characteristics and fundamentals will be handled. Issues that will be discussed are: definition, general uses, production by geographical sect characteristics of processes, market trends and competitve materials:
From the beginning of the course each participant will declare his/her interests regarding the applications of perlite– end uses and markets. Thus, for each session there will be an initial presentation, that will generate questions and discussions. For activating learning and increasing the effectiveness of teaching additional information and guidelines will be provided.

01/2010 – 03/2016: S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., Southern Europe Division, Mediterranean & Black Sea Business Unit – Expanded Perlite Operations Manager. Management of a multifunctional plant with every day production, serving a range of products covering construction, agriculture, hydroponics, filter aids, cryogenic insulation, fillers for paints. Technical support and advisory to S&B’s perlite plants for product and process development & optimization, marketing and investment decisions.
11/2002 - 12/2009: S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., Perlite Division, Technical Development Department - Technical Support Engineer. Responsible for international customers’ technical support. Project management and product development coordination. Participation in various internal, B2B and EU funded R&D projects based on industrial minerals. Responsible for knowledge data base of a very wide range of perlite qualities from all around the world through lab and industrial tests and analyses.
10/2000 -10/2002: Mathios Refractories S.A. - Head of Refractories Production Section. Production organizing and synchronizing of two plants. Decrement of operational costs. Product design and development, quality control, quality assurance.
01/1992 - 09/2000: National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Laboratory of Metallurgy Senior Researcher. Participation in projects funded by national and EU sources.
Mining & Metallurgy Engineer, PhD in Ceramic Materials Science. 25 years’ experience in QC/QA and New Product Development in different sectors of materials throughout their whole production process: ceramic raw materials and industrial minerals, use and recycling in various applications and new products.
2016 – Today: in.mat-Lab, Managing Director - Consulting SMEs in the sector of industrial minerals (bentonite, perlite etc) and building materials regarding mining exploration, new product development, quality management, environmental issues including waste management. Independent testing, analytical, consulting and development laboratory serving perlite and expanded perlite products Consulting SMEs regarding their participation in EC and/or national funded projects: idea initiating, networking, proposal writing, project management including scientific and financial administration.
2002-2014: S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., Materials Scientist, Head of Athens analytical Labs - i) deep knowledge and experience on the properties, applications and the markets of industrial minerals, as well as the corresponding final products ii) quality control management (physicochemical characterization and evaluation of incoming samples, compliance to the Group policies, supporting the various production sites on various quality topics) iii) project management aiming at the development of new products (programme implementation and dissemination, quality management and evaluation on a technical as well as on a market basis, budget and finance).
1992-2002: CERECO S.A, Responsible of Cement & Concrete Lab – providing services to the Greek industry, especially SMEs, regarding quality control as well as solutions for the usage and/or recycling of their raw materials.
Additional to this introductory course there is also an advanced course on this topic. Participation of the Introductory Course is not mandatory but prepares you best to take part in the advanced course. There is also a package deal for both courses.
